Wedding Gown Wednesday!

I saw this gown and thought "destination wedding". It's soft, romantic, and the back is oh-so-sexy. But the more I think about it, it can be worn for just about any wedding setting. And don't you just love the satin sash? In a way, it really makes the gown!

This gown is from the Jim Hjelm Blush line - a line that is described as "casual elegance". The gown, style #1205, is a slim organza gown with tulle veiling and hand placed lace appliques.

The gown retails at $1,650 (I know, what a bargain, huh?) but you'll look like a million bucks wearing it. With so many wine-themed favors out there (don't get me wrong, I love them!) I had to share these beautiful bottle openers with you.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Lauren Donovan Thibault, Owner of Laurel Events about her background and experiences with weddings in the New England area. Here’s what she had to say:

Me: Tell me about your professional background and what made you interested in wedding event planning.

Lauren: Before starting Laurel Events, I worked as a Media Planner at a major Boston advertising agency, then also in affiliate sales, events and marketing for many years at one of Boston's biggest sports regional stations. These two jobs taught me the importance of organization, creativity and keeping "my cool under pressure". I was very lucky to work on many events and vendor/client relationships with professional athletes and some of the biggest companies in New England.

Me: Why did you decide to start Laurel Events?

Lauren: Laurel Events was always an "idea" my husband and I thought I'd start at some point - maybe when we had children and I wanted to stay at home and do my own thing. I became very bored with my current situation at my last job and there was nowhere to grow or challenge myself within the business. The right opportunity came about and we decided to take a chance - and here I am today!

Me: How many events have you conducted to date?

Lauren: Laurel Events began in September 2010 and to date we have worked (or are working) on two fundraisers, and 12 weddings. In a short time we have very successfully built amazing vendor relationships and have been fortunate enough to attract fabulous brides! I can proudly say our brides are not just clients - but they become friends. We truly treasure being a part of such an important day and time in your lives!

Me: What types of wedding services do you offer and what are the advantages of each?

Lauren: I started Laurel Events on the complete basis of a la carte planning options. That being said I do have "packages" laid out that would cover full wedding coordination, partial wedding coordination or day of coordination.

I work by having a Free Consultation with each bride/couple, and from there I create a proposal based entirely on that couples' needs.

My goal is to provide a service that helps the couple where they need it. I do not pressure my clients into signing into a "general" package based on items they do not need help with. I lay out all options before the client and they commit to what they want at that point in time - if a client decides they want more help later on we are happy to amend their contract and add additional services.

In today's world where budgets are tight and time is limited - Laurel Events provides a service where our couples get advice and planning services where they need it and within a cost they can afford.

Me: What are a few things brides seem to be wanting this year - are there any trends that you are seeing emerge?

Lauren: I think more brides are wanting to make their wedding day just that - THEIR DAY. DIY projects aren't just about saving money - it's also about making the wedding intimate and personal to the couple. Brides are also savvy - not cheap. I believe each bride should prioritize on items that really mean the most to them regarding their budget and then find creative ways to supplement other elements in a more affordable fashion. Every bride wants her perfect day besides her budget - so she wants ideas that can help her get that!

Me: What do you think is your competitive edge in the industry? Why should a bride choose Laurel Events?

Lauren: We offer services the bride needs. Many vendors offer general packages - we offer only what each couple needs. There are a million resources out there today from websites, magazines and friends! Today's bride can plan a wedding on her own if she has the time and energy to do so - some brides do not need or want help and others do. Some brides only want help with a few ideas or day of prep and implementation. Other brides want someone to help them the whole planning process. No matter what your needs are - we don't consider anything too big or too small. Our goal is to help your wedding planning process become stress free and enjoyable! You only do this once so try to soak it all in and have fun! We work to find our clients the best services at the most competitive prices. We also are diligent leading up to and most importantly on your wedding day. Many venues have event managers but we are there to observe and manage every detail of your day - from hair/makeup to transportation to set up and decor. We manage every detail of your whole wedding and see your big picture. Our brides do not stress or worry about anything leading up to or on their most important day. The day flies by - really I know I've been there - so with all the planning and money being put into this - give yourself the ease of mind to really fully enjoy it all.

Me: What do you think are the top 5 reasons why a couple should choose your wedding services?

Lauren: 1. Customer service - We are always responsive and take time to get to know and understand our clients. This is your most intimate day and deserves respect and attention!

2. Pricing - our prices are very competitive and with our custom packages we can give you help where you need it most!

3. Vendor relationships - We have amazing relationships with some of Boston & New England’s best vendors! From transportation to uplighting or floral - we know professionals that have proven performance, great customer service and competitive pricing. Don't stress over "who and why" - let us guide you to the right vendor based on your personalities, needs and budget.

4. Detail Oriented and Organization - Some joke I have OCD but I think that's a plus! My strongest skill is organization and setting deadlines. One bride came to me 4 months before her wedding and didn't have a florist, makeup or hair, photographer, hotel blocks or transportation booked - oh and she was getting married on MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND in Boston! We had her lined up and relieved with all her vendor meetings and contracts within 3 weeks. If it's GO TIME - we are ready!

5. Management Experience - when it comes to a wedding there are a million moving pieces. It is NOT our job to step on the event managers toes of your venue. It is our job to be a middle man - to be the hub of your entire day and all the moving pieces. I have planned 300 person events and know that every vendor and working staff is crucial to the outcome. I build a relationship with your hairstylist to your florist to your band and church! We do not prevent anyone from doing what they are great at - we only help with timing, organization, implementation and damage control (should it exist). There are things that a venue event planner cannot help you with - perfect example one our brides dresses ripped in the hotel room before the ceremony! We were there to hem it back up - no one knew. To if a florist or cake or DJ is running late - we are there to coordinate and fix problems on the spot. Every major event needs a Director that is knowledgeable of ALL the moving pieces - not each individual task.

Me: Is there anything you want your prospective clients to know about you or something they would be surprised to find out?

Lauren: I love what I do. I married a man that is allowing me to take a risk and follow my heart and I'm truly blessed for that. I have a blast at each wedding I work! The favorite part of my day is the end of the night when my clients come up to me and really mean "wow thank you - we couldn't have done this without you". I've worked the corporate world where credit was never given, but to see the smile and thanks on my clients face - that means it’s all worth it to me. Not many people get to follow their dream and I'm so happy and lucky to have been given this chance.

Additionally - I'm also getting certified as a Yoga Instructor and I am completely obsessed with my golden retriever Bear and cat Holly.

Wedding Gown Wednesday!

I love spotlighting gowns that are not strapless. Don't get me wrong, I love strapless gowns and wore one myself. But gowns with straps are few and far between and to me, show an added extra level of maturity, elegance, and sophistication. And the more I think about it, those are words I would use to describe Jim Hjelm wedding gowns in general.

This drop-dead gorgeous gown by Jim Hjelm is perfect for any ballroom wedding. This ivory silk faced satin ball gown has a sleeveless crystal and pearl beaded bodice (how beautiful is that?), V-neckline, natural waist, side pockets, and a chapel train. If this isn't a jaw-dropper, I don't know what is. Can someone tell me why this gown wasn't available when I was looking for a wedding dress?

I am in love. Again. But this time, it's with a dress. Say hello to my new best friend - the Lazaro (Style 3208). This gown will turn heads. If you are looking for a red-carpet bridal look, this is it.

I can't decide if I like the top or bottom better. They are both equally stunning, just in different ways. The bodice is ivory silk mikado and is pleated, fitted, and has a corset back (slimming, right?) and it drops into a textured organza skirt. Pair it with a simple headpiece because this gown says it all.

Wedding Vendor Spotlight- Bagpiper Adam!

If you are considering having a bagpiper play at your wedding, there's really only one person to contact in the Greater Boston area. If you haven't heard of him yet, I am happy to be the one to introduce you to Adam Holdaway, A.K.A. "Bagpiper Adam".

Now, I'm not just talking about Adam here because I think his services sound great. I'm writing as a past client - yes, that's right. My husband and I had Adam play at our wedding ceremony. And, the first time I heard about him was on the boston.com wedding forums. I was reading a bride's post-wedding vendor review and she talked about Adam and how professional, and of course, talented he was. There were a few other posts talking about Adam as well, and every single post was not only positive, but pretty much stated he was best piper in the area. I didn't even bother looking anywhere else. I contact Adam, he was available on my wedding day, and the rest is history.

With so many wonderful reviews, I knew we were in good hands and to be honest, after we agreed to work together, I didn't give it a second thought. Adam knew the details of the wedding ceremony, and I trusted him. He selected appropriate music for a wedding - we didn't have to do anything (isn't that music to your ears when you're planning a wedding? ) When I arrived at the church, Adam was already playing, and the guests absolutely loved it. My husband's background is Irish and Scottish, so it was a no brainer to have a bagpiper at our wedding. And when I started walking into the church hearing Adam's music, it hit me - I was a bride. There's something about bagpipes that simply brings out emotions.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Adam recently about his background and the services he offers to local couples. Since I learned about Adam through online discussions, I wanted to do my part and spread the news a little more. Brides have to stick together and share fabulous vendors when we find them, right? Here's a little from my conversation with Adam:

Me: What made you decide to become a bagpiper for weddings and other events?

Adam: I began playing the pipes when I was 11 years old. I'm the first in my family to play so it made it that much more difficult to find and instructor and learn properly. I began performing at weddings and other events when I got to college. I needed a job because I was putting myself through school and piping seemed like a logical way (at the time) to make the money I needed for day to day expenses. Little did I know it would become my full-time career.

Me: How long have you been performing at weddings and how many have you done to date?

Adam: I've been performing at weddings since 1999. I've performed at approximately 500-600 weddings. That's a lot of weddings!

Me: How do most of your clients here about you?

Adam: Most of my clients find me on the internet via my website: www.bagpiperadam.com. I am also listed under "Boston's Best Musicians" on Boston.com. I also advertise my services on several wedding planning websites such as The Knot and PartyPop.

Me: Is there a minimum amount of time a client needs to hire you for?

Adam: There is no minimum time so to speak. I account for 2 hours and base my time off of the time needed to perform at a Catholic Mass (which is longest of the traditional ceremony options.) This allows for a 20-30 minute performance as guests arrive, time for the mass (about an hour) and 20-30 minutes after the ceremony as guests depart. Some ceremonies are shorter, but the same amount of preparation is needed for a 5 minute 'I do' and a 1-hour Mass.

Me: What is your travel area for weddings?

Adam: I travel within an hour radius of Boston and Lowell, MA. If your ceremony is out of my range, or I'm unavailable for the date, I always find someone for you.

Me: Do clients have to choose the music for their wedding or do you handle that on your own?

Adam: Clients can pick their music (so long as it's a bagpipe tune!) I have full-length samples on my website that clients can listen to and pick from. These aren't the only tunes I know, but just a few of the most popular. If they prefer to leave it to me, then that's OK too.

Me: What is your advice to couples interested in having a bagpiper perform at their wedding ceremony?

Adam: The best piece of advice I can give couples who are thinking of having a piper at their wedding is: Do your homework! There are MANY pipers here in the Boston area, but not all those who claim to play actually can! Just because someones price is cheap doesn't mean they are a bargain! You know me - I am always looking for fun and unique wedding favors and when I find them, I have to share them with you. I'm one of those people who thinks favors at weddings are an absolute must - they're such a small, but significant way to show your guests that you appreciate them attending and being there for you on your big day.

Favors, to me, should fall into one of two categories - useful or edible. And if you can find something in one of those categories AND have it be unique, well, you're just in luck! Wedding Gown Wednesday!

If there is one thing every bride wants it is to have a dress that's "different". Now, an interpretation of what 'different' means will, well, be differerent from person to person. But the bottom line is brides want to feel unique and confident when they put on that gown. No one wants to wear a gown similar to their best friend who got married 6 months ago, do they?

Well, what better way to make your gown unique than to wear something other than white or ivory? I'm no expert, but I would say about 99% of wedding gowns fall into one of those two color categories. Ok, who doesn't LOVE wine and cheese? It's my all-time favorite snack (can you say "snack" and "wine" in the same sentence? It doesn't seem to give it justice.) Regardless of what you call it, a lot of people enjoy their wine and cheese whether it be at a restaurant, at a party, at a friend's home for a casual gathering, or if you're like me, at home on a Saturday night curled up on the couch with a great movie.

Maybe's it just me, but this gown just makes me want to do the tango!

I LOVE this gown by Alfred Angelo! Part of their 2012 collection, it is made of taffeta and pleated organza and has rhinestone and crystal beading. The bodice is incredible and I bet it's incredibly slimming as well. Real Weddings - Jennifer and Daniel

As the year comes to close, I thought I should wrap things up with a heartwarming and picture-esque Real Weddings. I was just having a conversation with someone today about inspirational weddings and unique reception venues. So, I am thrilled to showcase the wedding of Jennifer and Daniel. In fact, when Jennifer told me they were wonderful friends and well-matched partners in life, I have to say I smiled to myself and felt so incredibly happy for a couple that I had never even met. I could sense her happiness, and you just don't find that very much nowadays.

Now, back to the wedding itself! I love that they chose a wedding location (Western Massachusetts) because it's an area that means a lot to them - they try to visit often, going to Tanglewood performances and simply for weekend trips.

I love that they decided to forego a wedding party, and instead, opted to have their family walk down the aisle during the processional during the ceremony.

I love that they chose a really fabulous reception venue - the Barrington Brewery in Great Barrington.

I love looking at wedding reception venues. And I love finding out about new event spaces, especially in the downtown Boston area. When new, modern restaurants and hotels open, it's all the buzz in the wedding industry and we all get excited thinking about what we would do with the space and how lucky brides- to- be are with the choices they (now) have. I love myself a good, old-fashioned traditional wedding, but what I love even more is when traditional and contemporary elements unite- and one of the best ways to achieve that is with your choice of event space.

So, that brings me to Morton's The Steakhouse. You've known them and loved them in the Back Bay for years. But if you are looking for a fabulous spot for your wedding reception in downtown Boston, you have to check out Morton's Seaport location. Here's why:

Each year, I give my husband a "wish list" of things I'd like for Christmas. If you know me, you know I love Reem Acra bridal gowns. So, you can only imagine my excitement when the Fall 2012 bridal line came out.

The collection features beaded dresses in hues of different shades of ivory. The gowns also are made up of sheer layers and textures, creating an almost whimsical feel.

While all the gowns are gorgeous, the one that stood out to me was "Fate" - an ivory tulle and beaded gown with organza ruffled skirt. It's so different than other beaded strapless gowns out there. Let's face it. If you're in the middle of wedding planning, you know by now that you need event space for all the parties that go along with getting married. I had the pleasure of speaking with Aimee Empee, owner / designer of Paper, Gowns and Glory. Here's what she had to say:

Me: How did you begin making paper sculptures?

Aime: I am a mixed media artist, so it was a natural progression. I did have a family members wedding to inspire the first paper doll cake topper in early 2010.

Me: How long have you been doing it?

Aimee: The wedding art business has been about two years. I've been an artist my whole life.

Me: How and when did you start your business?

Aime: Paper Gowns and Glory started in early 2010. Before that I solely sold my mixed media work. Now I do both.

Me: How would you break down your business?

Aimee: The cake toppers are most requested, by far. I do still sell my other mixed media work and am working on a new show when I have time.

Me:  Do your clients request centerpieces to serve as actual centerpieces or to have a keepsake replica of their actual floral centerpiece?

Aimee: They are meant to be the actual centerpiece, although the other way around is not a bad idea!

Me:  On average, how long does it take to create a "typical" cake topper?

Aimee: It really depends on the difficulty of the dress replication. Each piece is so customized. Anywhere from 2 to 4 days for a couple.

Me:  How soon in advance before a wedding do you request couples meet with you / submit a photo to have a paper sculpture done?

Aimee: The more time the better. It's often based on availability of the dress image. A lot of people contact me way before the dress is decided upon. I need at least 3 months.

Me: Do you feel wedding trends influence your business? If so, how?

Aimee: I don't follow trends, but I have noticed Brides reference never seeing anything like this work before. I think everyone wants to feel as though their event, wedding or otherwise, includes unique and interesting elements. My work is a way for Brides' to express themselves with a piece of art and hold onto the essence of the day after it is over. It's more than a wedding album, it lives in the space with you.

Me: What do you see the future may hold for paper sculptures in weddings? What other aspects of weddings do you feel you may get involved with someday?

Aimee: Paper has so many applications, which makes it really fun to brain storm with couples and see what you can do with it to reflect their personalities. I have already done some paper chandeliers, large floral back drops for photo shoots, & cut paper wedding favors. I would like to see more of those items. I'd like to work bigger.

This is for cake lovers, wedding cake shoppers and foodies!

If you haven't heard of BosCakes yet, I am so happy to be the one to introduce you to this wonderful and talented company. Honestly, if "BosCakes" wasn't their name, there are so many other options I could think of to name them. Let's see...."Amazing Cakes", "Simply Scrumptious Cakes", "Almost Afraid to Eat Cakes Because They So Gorgeous, But Then You Take A Bite and They are Delicious Cakes". Yeah, that sums it up.

I came across BosCakes by just doing an Internet search for cake bakers in my area. I was looking for someone to create a beautiful themed cake for a birthday party and I found them. Thank God.   Once I saw their designs on their website and spoke to Rebecca Bosque, owner and designer of BosCakes of Norton, MA, I couldn't wait to work with her and see what she could come up with. Right on their website, it states they create cakes to exceed their clients' expectations - and that's exactly what she did for me.

BosCakes creates wedding cakes, party cakes, brownies, blondies and cake pops. Cake pops seem to be the rage right now so I had to order them as favors for my party (and yes, they were just as beautiful and delicious as the cake itself).

As soon as the guests at my party were literally lining up to take pictures of the cake Rebecca made, I knew I was working with a fabulous vendor. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Rebecca about her work:

Me: How did you get started in baking and cake design?

Rebecca: I have many childhood memories of baking with my mom from as early as I can remember. Though we usually baked chocolate chip cookies more than cake, the sweetness (literal and non) of the experience hooked me for life! My love for cake decorating didn't start until about 11 or 12 years of age, with a Winnie the Pooh cake covered in the classic star-tip dots, 1000s of them! My hands hurt like heck but from that moment I knew that cake would be far from the last I ever made! While I still made cakes here and there from through all my schooling, it wasn't until spring of 2010 that I really devoted my efforts to my cake passion.

Me: How and when did you start BosCakes?

Rebecca: BosCakes officially started in March 2011. I made cakes for friends and family for years, and as the demand grew, starting a business seemed like the natural next step. Paired with the need to supplement my husband's income, creating the business became a necessity. I'm thankful that I'm able to make a profit and benefit my family by doing something I really love.

Me: Do you feel wedding cakes make up most of your work?

Rebecca: Since we are a fairly new business that began after the time most brides place their wedding cake orders, we missed out on a lot of 2011 weddings. Currently, birthday cakes make up about 60% of our business, and sculpted/3D cakes about 35%, with a few bridal shower and graduation cakes in the mix.

Me: What trends are you seeing in wedding cake design this past year? Are brides and grooms asking for particular items or colors?

Rebecca: Fabric-inspired designs are popular, especially techniques that replicate design elements from the bride's dress. Gray is trendy, though now the popular color is cobalt blue and other jewel tones.

Me: Do most of your bridal couples like to come up with their own designs with you or do they choose from your past cakes?

Rebecca: Since I won't copy a cake even if it's one of my past cakes, a lot of clients will pick out certain parts or techniques from previous cakes that I will include into a truly unique design for that client. One of my goals with each cake is to make sure the final product will be only that client's cake and not one of fifty of the same cake.

Me: How soon in advance do you suggest bridal couples place their orders?

Rebecca: I recommend bridal couples meet with their desired cake artist about 6-9 months in advance. That amount of time isn't so long that the couple can't remember what cake they tasted at the consultation, and not so short that the cake artist has to rearrange their schedule to fit in a last-minute order.

Me:  How did you get involved with the Food Network Challenge? Can you tell me a little bit about your experience with that?

Rebecca:  I was invited to audition by a producer of the show. The whole experience was amazing and happened so fast! I hadn't even been on a plane before this trip! Filming was a roller-coaster of emotions, and is something I will never forget. I can't give more details, so you'll have to watch the show on Sunday, November 6th at 8pm EST on the Food Network to see what happens!

Me: Do you have a favorite cake design that you have done and if so, what is it?

Rebecca: One of my favorites will always be my sculpted leopard cake. This cake involved tons of planning and lots of risk, but thankfully was a success! Other than that, I love any design that's feminine with a little sexiness and edge. Fabric-inspired techniques are fun to do and also look amazing!

I keep wondering to myself - if there was one thing I could have changed about my wedding dress, what would it have been?

Real Weddings - Heather & Mitch

I love winter weddings. There is just something even more special and romantic about them than weddings in other seasons. Maybe it's because we see most weddings in the spring, summer and fall that when a winter one comes around, my first reaction is one of awe. I immediately start imagining what the decor will look like. I start envisioning a touch of holiday decor coupled with bride and groom's personal wedding touches.

Heather and Mitch had a storybook winter wedding. The setting was picturesque Red Lion Inn in Cohasset. What made their wedding even more unique was that it was held on New Year's Eve (ok, how many times has someone asked you what you were doing for New Year's and have you EVER been able to say you were going to a wedding? I've always been a fan of Henry Roth. Set aside my slight obsession with Style Court, I truly love Henry Roth's bridal gowns. The designs allow for fashion-conscious brides to have the gown of their dreams without breaking the bank (imagine that!)

Even though we're seeing some fab Fall 2011 gowns making their debut in the stores now, I can't help but revert back to some of the wonderful spring gowns I saw earlier this year. What I have loved most about them is that the gowns are traditional, but with a slight twist and just enough detail. No one wants to look at their wedding pictures in 10 years and think "I can't believe I wore that".

I LOVE this gown by Modern Trousseau. When I saw it for the first time, I couldn't help but think it can be worn by a bride in her 20's, 30's, and 40's. It's simple and elegant, and not to "princess-y". It can be worn for a ballroom, country club, city, or beach wedding. The subtle polka-dots give just enough "wow" factor without over-doing it. But what I love best about this gown is the black and white sash. It's different that the traditional solid color sashes you see, and it just says "elegance".

The Wedding Swirl Wedding Show - September 18th in Boston!

When I was planning my wedding a few years back, I was so excited to finally be able to attend bridal shows. I was a bride!!! I attended every bridal show I learned about within a 30 mile radius, wore the free "bride" pin they distributed at the front door (not that anyone would have mistaken me for anything BUT a bride with the permanent grin on my face), and collected every possible business card and brochure from every vendor in attendance. I was so sad to hear of the closing of Priscilla of Boston late yesterday. Not only are they an icon in the Boston community, but nationwide. Priscilla gowns have been sold not only in their flagship store locations but also in boutique bridal salons for decades.

Real Weddings - Sandra and Shawn

I love hearing proposal stories. To me, the more tears the better, and the story of Sandra and Shawn's proposal literally had me reaching for tissues (yes, I'm a sap).

There's always so much pressure on a guy to create the perfect proposal. Whether it's low key or over the top, I think the best thing a guy can do is take the time to make the proposal truly about them. And that's what Shawn did when he proposed to Sandra. While making Valentine's Day dinner, Shawn asked Sandra to come into the kitchen to look at the chocolate covered strawberries he arranged because they "didn't look right". When Sandra came in, she saw dipped white strawberries with the letters "W-I-L-L Y-O-U" written on them. Sandra figured out the rest instantly, and turned to see Shawn on one knee with the ring. (Ok, how many of you just said. "aww!") I love it because it's sweet and genuine and, as Sandra said, "it was so us".

Once your gown arrives and the fittings are scheduled, you're going to need your wedding shoes. I know, because when I had to search for my own bridal shoes, the only place I was able to find the selection I was looking for was Shoes To Dye For.

I had a chance to speak with Ron Davis, President and CEO of Shoes to Dye for in Natick. Here's what he had to say.

Me: Tell me a little bit about Shoes to Dye For. When did the store first open? What inspired you to open this store? What is your background, etc?

Ron: Shoes To Dye For officially opened in 2002. Before that, my parents owned Shoe Horn which began as a boutique clothing/shoe store with three locations in Natick, Newton, and Acton. They carried a small selection of bridal and dyeable shoes as well. I saw a niche market in the dyeable shoe area and when they downsized to a single store in Newton, I grew my own bridal accessories company in Natick. I began Shoes To Dye For specializing in shoes, and have grown it into a complete bridal accessories shop. We now carry not only dyeable shoes, but veils, tiaras, hair accessories, flower girl baskets, guest books, custom jewelry, and much more! I have always had an eye for color, but mixing colors and dyeing shoes for my parents gave me years of experience in shoe dyeing. I am proud to say that we custom mix a color for each individual customer, rather than having them pick off of a chart. This really allows us to work with the texture, tone, and movement of each fabric and enables us to match virtually anything!

Me: What trends are you seeing brides look for in wedding shoes this season?

Ron: A huge trend in wedding shoes this year is color, color, and more color! Brides are looking for ways to infuse their personalities into their wedding day and shoe color is a great option. After the "Sex and the City" movie premiered, brides couldn't get enough of Carrie's idea. We have been dyeing tons of bridal shoes blue for a fun twist on "something blue". We have also seen brides dye their shoes to match the color of their bridesmaids to help tie their ensembles together on the big day. Not only is this a fun trend, it makes for some really awesome pictures!

Me: What advice would you give brides and their bridal party looking for shoes?

Ron: A great option for bridal parties is to choose a shoe that comes in multiple heel heights. Companies like Touch Ups and Dyeables have recognized that while the bride may want all of her bridesmaids to look alike, not everyone can wear a 4" heel. It is very important that the girls are able to walk down the aisle and dance the night away. Therefore, they have created shoes which come with the same front, but varying heel heights. Each bridesmaid can choose the height she feels most comfortable in, and once the shoes are dyed, no one will be able to tell the difference.

Me: Can you dye shoes that were purchased elsewhere?

Ron: We can dye shoes that were not purchased through us, but we offer a discounted price on dyeing if the shoes were bought here. We also cannot guarantee dye jobs on items which are not ours, as we never know how a shoe or handbag will take the dye until we actually apply the dye.

Me: What other wedding day necessities do you offer at Shoes to Dye For?

Ron: Shoes To Dye For carries dyeable, bridal, and evening shoes as well as children's shoes. We stock veils, tiaras, hair combs and pins, headbands, handbags, guest books, ring bearer pillows, flower girl baskets, unity candles, sand ceremony kits, garters, toasting flutes, server sets, jewelry, belts/sashes, and more!

Me: How large is your shoe selection?

Ron: We carry about 250 styles of shoes in the store in multiple sizes and widths. Most customers buy right from our stock but we are happy to order other sizes or styles if needed. Me: Can you tell me a little bit about your company and your background?

She meets with me. I order and purchase the flowers and do most of the designing. If she feels she has a good report with me, she can be relaxed and stress free about at least one part of her wedding (the flowers!)

My first "after school" job in high school was in a flowers shop. After college I got a job again in a flowers shop to make some money while I figured out what to do with the rest of my life. After several years there, I realized FLOWERS and assisting clients with their very special life events was what I wanted to do. Thus, Jeri Solomon Floral Design started. . . I have 3 goals with every client: provide them with gorgeous flowers, impeccable design and uncompromising service so that they get rave reviews from their guests.

Me: What trends are you seeing in wedding floral design this season?

Jeri: A general trend is I'm seeing more smaller weddings. Under 100 people. I've done more weddings for under 50 this year and last than ever before in 17 years of business. Another trend, adding non-floral elements to arrangements-- especially bouquets-- like crystals or feathers.
In ceremonies-arrangements that can be moved and repurposed at the reception.
And in reception decor- not all the same arrangement on each table. Perhaps 2-4 designs that vary throughout the tables. For all flowers. BRIGHT colors! I love that people aren't afraid of color in flowers and other decor elements like linen and lighting.

Me: What advice would you have for brides looking to hire a floral designer in the Greater Boston area? How does a bride narrow down her options and select the best designer for her wedding?

Jeri: I think there are 3 important factors in choosing a floral designer.

1) Do you like their work? You want to be able see work they've done. The designer should have photos on a website, Facebook, portfolio etc. The photos may not be in the exact color scheme of your wedding, but you can get a sense of whether you like the designer’s style and does it complement your personal style.

2) Do you like them and feel like they "understand you" and will work with you to make your wedding vision come to life--without adding stress to the process? Do you click with the designer? You are going to be working with them for several months. You are communicating your vision to a person who is going to use a subjective art form to produce your vision. This is not always a straightforward process. You have to feel comfortable with that designer and trust them.

3) Do they provide all the services you want/need. Some brides just need flowers delivered to the venue at the proper time. Some need the designer to build structures (archways, chuppahs etc.) on site and then stay on site through the wedding to move or dismantle a structure. Do you want to see a sample centerpiece? Do you want someone to pin on boutonnieres? Do you want to have a designer on site when the flowers are delivered or is it OK for the delivery guy to drop them off. Floral companies offer different levels of service. Think about your needs and make sure the company you hire can accommodate them.

Me: What regions do you cover in the Greater Boston area?

Jeri: Most of my weddings are in the Boston area. But I always say "have van, will travel" and I've done weddings on the Cape, in New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island.

Me: How soon in advance should a bride meet with you and "book" you for her wedding?

Jeri: People meet with me anywhere from 15 months to 2 months before their wedding. Most important is to have the ceremony and reception venue chosen. It also helps to have an idea of some of the colors they will use in their wedding. Once a bride has those pieces in place, then she's ready to have a productive meeting with a floral designer. To be more specific on timing, I feel puts unnecessary pressure on a bride. I've put together simple weddings in 10 days. My preference is to start the planning process 6-12 months prior to her wedding.

Who doesn't love edible favors? Especially chocolate!

I think of all the cheesy knick-knacks my parents have collected over the years from all the weddings they have attended (say 2 weddings a year for the past 30 years at least) and my mom's obligatory feeling to keep them all. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jacki Norrie, founder / owner of Wedding Tresses, about the company, their services, and some of the beauty trends for the upcoming wedding seasons.

Me: As a former Boston bride myself, I know how hard it is to find a hair stylist who is willing to come to your location to help you prepare for your big day. What made you decide to start this business?

Jacki: As a hairdresser in a busy boutique salon I saw first hand how salons, and hairdressers, do not want to open for business on Sundays or early morning hours to accommodate brides, and I witnessed salon owners booking wedding parties with stylists who didn't have the training or skill to effectively execute beautiful formal hair styles. More often than not, wedding parties left the salon late. By creating a company that only services brides, I envisioned how we could cater to the bride and her girls in a professional and skilled manner with a focus on executing flawless styles that would stand up from the first step upon the aisle to the last kiss that night. That skill takes repetition and focused study - since it is all we do it is all we train for.

Me: Tell me a little bit about your background and Wedding Tresses.

Jacki: I attended Blaine Beauty School in Hyannis MA in 1990 and began working for Fantastic Sam's - learning on the job so to say....needless to say I made a bunch of "oops" haircuts! I moved on to a wonderful boutique salon, Unforgettable Hair, in Sandwich, MA in 1995 where I worked as a stylist specializing in cutting, highlight foiling and wedding hair and makeup. I left there in 2004 to work full time as a wedding stylist.

Wedding Tresses was created in 2003 and at first only offered hair design services. By the end of 2004, I had a wonderfully talented makeup artist who came on board and we began offering makeup and hair. In 2005, I opened the first of our studios and have grown since that time to include studios in Boston and Newport.

Me: How many hair stylists and make up artists are part of your team?

Jacki: We have 8 hair designers and 6 makeup artists between the 3 studios. 3 of our artists are dually trained in both hair and makeup - this helps with small, or Bride Only bookings.

Me: Where do you normally have trial runs?

Jacki: In one of our 3 studios.

Me: What is your advice to brides not sure what hairstyle will look best on them and the shape of their face?

Jacki: Bring photos! Lots of pictures showing things you love and things you find distasteful. An image doesn't need to be the exact style you want, but rather it can show a bang, or a sweep of the hair, or the size of a bun, curl, tendril... any small piece of a look you like. Your designer should take all of these small components and put them together to create "your" look. When looking at pics, try to keep your face shape in mind and see if you can spot those models with similar facial structure as you - that will give you a great head start of weeding out what works and what doesn't.

Me: Are there any styles you feel are very popular this year?

Jacki: Yes! Lush full hair styles are a must for this year. Advances in clip in extensions have made it a breeze for brides to amp up the volume without having to "marry" dreaded hair extensions.

Me: Any trends you are seeing in hair and make-up?

Jacki: We are seeing a lot of hair requests for an "as I am every day, only fancier" Look... Kate Middleton exemplified this trend with her own hair style at her wedding to Prince William - she looked as she did everyday, just more polished. As for makeup? Well it is still all about the lashes. Drama on the eyes without looking 'made up' is our most requested makeup Look for Wedding Season 2011. Lip stains are also a huge trend we are seeing and one we embrace due to its long-lasting kissable color that just keeps on and on and on.

Me: How do you determine the best number of stylists and make up artists to have for an entire bridal party?

Jacki: We require that the bride hire more than one designer from each discipline once her numbers hit 13 - but before that magic number 1 hair designer and 1 makeup artist is ample for most brides. A bride always has the option of hiring more than one designer should she want to shorten her timeline for getting ready. Because we are a wedding only company we are very fast at creating long-lasting updos and blowouts for formal occasions - It is kind of like typing, the more you do it the faster and more precise you get.

Me: How many weddings has Wedding Tresses helped "design" since the company started?

Jacki: Since 2003 we have been part of just over 1000 weddings!!! Crazy, I know - but true.

Me: How can a bride guarantee she will have you to "do her hair" on her wedding day?

Jacki: If she would like to work with me it is best to inquire early in the planning process since I book quickly - I do print, magazine, and television projects as well and they can have me on the road. That doesn't mean if a bride is close to her wedding date that she cannot ask our office it per chance I am available.... you never know!!

Me: Anything else you would like to share with Boston area brides?

Jacki: Work with reputable companies for hair and makeup. I cannot tell you how many times each year we receive last minute phone calls from concierges, wedding planners and brides in a panic because her hair and/or makeup artist bailed at the last minute or is among the "missing" - these calls happen on the Big Day of at times!! The horror! We make sure the concierges in Boston have my cell phone number so that when this occurs they can reach me and we can get mobilized -even if that means calling on our vendor friends if we are completely booked. The BEST resource for getting a reputable company is your photographer. Second to that would be your wedding planner or venue coordinator. They will know who shows up, who performs well, and who to stay away from.

Another item that I believe is rarely recognized is that your pictures are only as good as your hair and makeup. In other words, the best photographer in the world can only produce images based on what is presented. Your hair and makeup are an investment in your photography - don't skimp, you'll regret it. One of the best compliments we receive is from photographers, they tell us how much they like to work with WT because there is little if any photoshop to be done on the pictures - and that cuts down their work, but it also gets the images to the bride that much faster after the wedding.

NEW Summer Bachelorette Parties at Improv Asylum!

If you are planning a bachelorette party for a friend or if you are the bride to be and want to drop a few hints to the people planning your b-party, you have to check out All the Single Ladies, Improv Asylum’s new summer party geared especially toward, well, ladies!

You may have been to Improv Asylum on Hanover Street in the North End and even seen (or been part of) bachelorette parties skits in the past. They’ve jazzed things up for the summer and have a new show and a new location (Revolution Rock Bar on High Street in downtown Boston).

I recently spoke with Mary Largenton, Events Manager at Improv Asylum, about All the Single Ladies and what we can expect.

Me: I recently heard about "All the Single Ladies" - how is this different from girls just getting together and going to see a regular Improv show? I have attended before as part of a bachelorette party (at the regular Improv show). I see this is at a new location?

Mary: All the Single Ladies is a high energy interactive dance party which is centered around a group of four “ladies” who are out celebrating a bachelorette party. The show takes place at Revolution Rock Bar on High street and allows us to do some really fun things with the crowd we don't get to do at our regular home shows. All the Single Ladies is a different show than what you would see at our theater on Hanover Street in the North End. Shows that take place at our theater are our signature show which is a blend of produced improv & sketch comedy where as All the Single Ladies is one story line with some improvisational games that the cast plays with the audience.

Me: Do bridesto be get any special attention during this show? Can you tease us with a couple ideas on what might happen?

Mary: Yes! We do invite anyone who is celebrating something up on stage. Some of the ladies who get pulled up on stage will be asked to help come up with an improvised dance, while others may find what it is like to kiss a “girl” and if find out if they like it!

Me: Do you still have the traditional shows on Saturday nights at Improv Asylum where you can call ahead and tell them you have a bride to be in your group?

Mary: Yes! We have shows at our theater on Hanover Street six days a week! Each Improv Asylum home show features what we call a volunteer spot. There is one spot per show. The spot is available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee for the spot and can only be secured once you purchase tickets. The actors will know that your volunteer is getting married and will ask questions about her wedding, how she meet her fiancé, what they both do for work, etc. The actors use that information & any hilarious anecdotes the bride has told and do several scenes based off that information which we call “day in the life.”

Me: What do your "bachelorette party packages" consist of?

Mary: For just our shows that take place at our theater on Hanover Street, we offer two packages that we call “Girls Night Out” that are hugely popular with bachelorette and birthday parties. The package includes your ticket to the show, a champagne toast, a TV monitor shout-out to your bride or group, and a gift bags. You can also upgrade package to get VIP access to our bar line! For All the Single Ladies, we offer a $35 VIP reserved seating ticket. Purchasing that ticket guarantees you seating with premiere view of the performance.

Me: What can you tell us about the show's actors?

Mary: The actors in All the Single Ladies are all professionally trained actors & improvisers. For all of them this is their first time dressing & performing as ladies. Although, now almost halfway through the revue, they can put on their make-up on faster than any girl I know!

Me: Can you buy tickets online? Is there a minimum or maximum number of tickets a group would need?

Boston's Filene's Basement Running of the Brides Event!

I was fortunate to finally witness firsthand the Running the Brides in Boston this morning! I say "fortunate" because I have always wanted to attend - I knew I couldn't shop for my own wedding gown that way, but I was always secretly hoping that one of my friends had the courage to do it and need me on their team. It was a lot of fun and it was great to see all the happy brides and their friends and families so excited first thing in the morning.

This was such a great team! Shannon (with the tiara and the "Kiss Me I'm Irish" t-shirt on) from Somerville, MA had 8 members on her team and arrived at 6:30 am to help her search for the perfect one-shoulder gown. Her fiance proposed to her at her favorite restaurant this past December in front of her family. Their wedding is planned for St. Patrick's Day 2012.

Brooke, from Quincy, MA (wearing the sash) and her team of 15 arrived at 6:30 am to help her shop for her perfect gown. Her fiance proposed as they decorated their Christmas tree together this past December. They are planning on getting married in September.

Yaritza of Brockton, MA and her team of 6 arrived at 4:20 am to help her find her dream mermaid style gown. Her fiance proposed on Christmas Day and they have an April 2012 wedding planned.

The calm before the storm - 180 racks and a total of 2,800 gowns - all neatly hung.

Tips From the Experts at Filene's Basement for Running of the Brides Friday!

Friday morning, before you leave the house

Dress in a sports bra and bike shorts, leotard or swim suit
Leave your handbag behind; you’ll want as little as possible to keep track of
Don’t wear make-up—it might rub off on the dresses
No jewelry; last year a bride-to-be lost her engagement ring when it got caught on a lacy dress.

Best time to arrive at the store Friday morning

If you want to be part of the ‘rush to the racks’ then you should be at the store by 6AM

At the sale

Be considerate and play fair; please, please, please don’t horde dresses; grab what you can, go through the dresses quickly and give up what you don’t want so other brides can get started. Filene’s Basement reserves the right to limit the number of gowns you can hold at one time.

Bridal Handbag Parties with 1154 LILL Studio of Boston

You’ve heard of them, you’ve been to them, and perhaps you have even held them. Hosted sales parties. You know what I mean – Pampered Chef, Lia Sophia, Party Lite Candles, Tastefully Simple. The trend of combining shopping and mingling has been around for decades, way back to when our mothers were hosting and attending Tupperware and Avon parties. They’ve come a long way, that’s for sure.

But I have to say I literally froze when I heard about the latest trend – handbag parties. Could this be? OMG why hasn’t anyone ever thought if this before? If you are anything like me, you actually salivate at the thought of a new handbag. You may even frequent http://forum.purseblog.com/ where others who share your same lust for handbags can finally converse about their favorite topic without judgment – even have a little fun by trying to ID celebrity bags seen on TV or in magazines.

I attended a Bridal Expo in Boston last summer and came across 1154 LILL Studio. Hmm, this looked interesting. Handbags? At a bridal expo? I’ve got to check this out.

Evidently, (no had ever told me, probably in an attempt to keep me from never wanting to leave their Newbury Street shop) 1154 LILL Studio is a one of a kind retail and e-tail store specializing in customized handbags. I stood before a table of gorgeous bags thinking “How in the world am I going to choose just one?” These bags were gorgeous – the fabric, the patterns, everything. And to think you can customize them! Even today, I find myself (sneaking) to their website, waiting to see what new designs they have come up with.

You’re probably wondering this all sounds great, but what does it have to do with weddings? A lot. I remember planning my wedding and struggling to find the perfect gift to give my bridal party. Believe it or not, my thank you gift to them were handbags. I wish I had know of 1154 LILL Studio.

As a bride, you actually have a couple of fun options. You could choose clutches or wristlets for your bridal party to either use the day of your wedding or just to have for afterwards. Or, (this is where the fun comes in) you can host a handbag party. This can be done at your home or at their Newbury Street location. How does this work? Well, you basically gather your bridal party in the location of your choice, hang out together, look at designs, pick out fabrics and basically design your own handbag. And in less than a month, you receive your new handbag!

I recently spoke with Alan Karo, Chief Marketing Officer with 1154 LILL Studio:

Me: Can you tell me a little bit about handbag parties? How is a typical party run and what is the typical timeline of events for both in-store and on-location parties? How many attendees can you accommodate for a handbag party in-store in Boston?

Alan: Our handbag parties, like our handbags, are tailored to meet each customer’s specific needs whether in our boutique or on-location. In all cases, personalized attention and design ‘guidance’ is provided by our expert stylists and party reps. And since the custom-designed LILL bags ordered at a party take 3-4 weeks to be individually tailored in our Chicago headquarters, we work with our customers to schedule parties accordingly.

Me: How long does a "party" normally last?

Alan: Parties generally last between ninety minutes and two hours. There’s never any need to rush.

Me: How many parties can your Boston store location hold at once?

Alan: The minimum party size is 5 and our store can accommodate up to 3 parties at one time and still manage walk-in traffic. We are also able to accommodate one large party of 30-35 people.

Kids at Weddings - A Do or Don't?

It's true - some guests will just assume their children will be invited to your wedding. You may start to hear comments like, "Oh, we're so glad you aren't one of those brides who says no kids allowed" or "Will you have things to keep little Johnnie occupied during the reception?"

There are some couples who may want to have kids at their wedding. My husband and I were one of those couples. We have close family and friends with small children and we wanted to include them. Some took us up on the invite while others just wanted an evening out without the kids.

If you decide to have children attend your wedding, plan a few things to make it easier on everyone involved.

First - the bride and groom. As much as you love little kids, you may not want to have them screaming during your vows or during your first dance. Make sure kids are seated with their parents or adults who are designated to "watch them" during the wedding. No one wants children running around as if this were a friend's 7th birthday party. Also, ask your caterer / venue if they offer a kids menu option. This normally consists of chicken fingers and French fries type of dish and usually at a significantly lower per plate cost.

Second - the parents / guardians. It probably wouldn't hurt to let the parents know their kids will be sitting with them and not a designated "kids table". That should drop the hint to them that they will be responsible for their kids while they are at the wedding and it's not a free pass for the parents to hang out at the open bar all night without the kids.

Third - the kids. Some may like the idea of dressing up like a grown up for a night and going to an adult party but others may just dread it. Plan a few things to make it easier on them during the reception. For instance, coloring books and (washable) crayons for little ones or puzzle books for older kids may make the night go by faster and give them something to do between dinner and (maybe) some dancing.

If you decide not to have kids at your wedding, you are not alone, but be prepared. People may make unwanted comments about it, but just hold your position. At the end of the day, this is your wedding and you are paying for the meals not your guests.

A few thoughts:

Word your invitations carefully. Address the invitation to "Mr. & Mrs. John Smith" only.

Add "adults only" with the reception information.

If you feel very generous, offer a child care option for those traveling from out of town. Maybe you know a trusted sitter who is willing to take on a small group of kids that night, possibly in the same location as your wedding (for example, if your wedding is in a hotel, you could reserve a room and have all the kids there with a sitter or two, order pizza, and watch movies while the parents are at the reception).

Whatever you decide, make sure you and your groom are comfortable with it and are polite to guests who may just assume things (there are some people out there who will assume!) This is your wedding and it should be what you both want.

Choosing the Best Bridesmaids Gifts

When it comes to bridesmaid thank you gifts, make sure you choose something that truly makes your bridal party feel appreciated. Keep in mind what it's like being on the receiving end of those gifts and that should hopefully help you weed out the not-so-great gifts out there!

So where do you start?

First, think budget. Figure out how much you can spend on each bridesmaid. It's important to spend roughly the same amount on each girl (say, if you are choosing different gifts for each of them) and slightly more for the maid / matron of honor.

Second, let's start out by going over what not to get your girls. Remember, anything you want your bridesmaids to wear for you is not a gift for them. Items to avoid include;

-Tshirts that read "BRIDESMAID"

-Personalized bridesmaid panties

-Jewelry that you want them to wear on the wedding day

-Paying to have their hair done for the wedding

-Paying for the bridesmaid dresses

Ok, now that we have established items to stay away from, let's get to the good stuff. After speaking with several girls who have held the coveted role of "bridesmaid", I have come up with a list of the top 10 gifts for today's bridesmaid.

1) Manicures / Pedicures at a spa
Treat the girls to a day at the spa - either a few weeks before the wedding or a couple days before the wedding itself. If this is something they would love, try to get a group deal and reserve some slots to have everyone go at once to enjoy each other's company. It can be a great day for everyone to get to know each other (if they don't already) and just provides a relaxing atmosphere before the big day. Some spas will even let you bring in some champagne so ask around!

2) Massages scheduled for the day after the wedding (gotta relieve all that dancing somehow!)

3) Jewelry that reflects their style (if a bridesmaid only wears silver and white gold, buying a yellow gold necklace as a thank you gift to them will just leave them rolling their eyes)

4) Gift certificates to each of their favorite restaurants or stores

5) Monogrammed tote bags or overnight bags

6) Something unique to the location of your wedding (for instance, this would be great if you had a destination wedding)

7) Cosmetic bags filled with their favorite line of make up

8) Small Coach (or other designer) purses (I did this and the girls really seemed to like it)

9) Tiffany perfume (who can resist the little blue bag?)

10) iPod Shuffle

Just remember, what is most important is that you make your bridesmaids feel appreciated and that you put some thought into their gift.
